The beautiful coastal town of Salcombe is situated on the west side of the Kingsbridge estuary, in the South Hams area of southern Devon. It is a scenic and un-commercialised area, especially popular with sailors and yachtsmen because of the sheltered harbour and excellent conditions in the area for sailing. In the summer months especially the waterfront can be teeming with yachts, which bring with them a real buzz of activity to the area.
Salcombe’s harbour is not only a destination for tourists, however, as the town has a long history of boat and ship building and crabbing continues to be an industry active from this port. Nevertheless Salcombe’s attraction to private yachtsmen and tourists continues to be its greatest source of income and this is reflected in the sort of clientele which many of the town’s shops and restaurants cater to. Salcombe is especially popular with visitors from the South East of England, particularly the home counties, many of whom bring their own boats and yachts with them.
Access to Salcombe is predominantly by car, and a park and ride scheme is operated because of the narrow nature of the roads leading down through the town to the seafront. There are a number of attractions within driving distance and the town provides good walking routes both to the west and the east along the coastal paths.
A visit to Salcombe is one you won’t forget. In fact the scenery, beaches, sights and sounds will have many visitors planning to return year after year, and whether it’s a cottage, hotel or B&B you’re looking for Go2 will have you spoilt for choice.
